About Keibul Lamjao Wet Forest

Keibul Lamjao National Park is the world's only floating national park, existing on the phumdis — masses of floating decomposed vegetation — of Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in northeast India. The park is the last natural refuge of the sangai, the brow-antlered deer of Manipur, a critically endangered species that has evolved to live on these shifting floating islands, distributing its weight to avoid sinking. The sangai is the state animal of Manipur and was once thought extinct until rediscovered here in the 1950s.
