About Someshwara Forest

Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary near Udupi on the Karnataka coast is a narrow strip of moist semi-evergreen and evergreen forest wedged between the Arabian Sea and the Ghats escarpment. The sanctuary is one of the last intact stretches of coastal forest in the region — a forest type that has been almost entirely converted to coconut and areca nut plantations along the Konkan and Karnataka coasts. The flying lizard, which glides between trees on extended rib-supported skin flaps, is a charming and characteristic resident of these forest margins.
