About Banjhakri Falls
Banjhakri Falls in Gangtok is the centrepiece of a beautifully landscaped energy park that celebrates Sikkim's mythological shamanic tradition — the Banjhakri, or forest shaman, is a powerful spirit-figure in Sikkimese and Nepali folk belief, and the falls are considered a site of spiritual energy. Statues of shamanic figures, tribal artefacts, and orchid gardens surround the waterfall, creating one of India's most unusual waterfall visitor experiences that blends natural beauty with indigenous cultural storytelling.
The falls themselves cascade over a series of carved rock platforms in the Roro Chu stream, with the surrounding hillside terraced into a series of botanical gardens displaying Sikkim's extraordinary diversity of orchids, ferns, and flowering shrubs. The park is one of Gangtok's most visited attractions and provides a genuine introduction to the cultural traditions of Sikkim alongside the natural spectacle of the falls. A suspended bridge above the cascade offers aerial views across the forest canopy toward the snow peaks on clear days.
Morning before crowds; May–October for good flow and lush surrounding vegetation.
The tribal sculptures around the falls make for unusual foreground elements — combine them with the cascade in a wide composition.
