About Tirathgarh Falls

Tirathgarh Falls inside Kanger Valley National Park is a spectacular multi-tiered cascade of the Muktal stream, dropping in white stages through the mixed forest of the Bastar plateau. The total vertical drop over all tiers approaches 300 metres, though no single stage exceeds 100 metres — the effect is of a staircase of water descending through the forest for an extraordinary distance. The site is sacred to the tribal communities of Bastar, who hold annual ritual festivals at the falls.

Being inside Kanger Valley National Park — which also contains the spectacular Kotumsar Cave system — means that visiting Tirathgarh is simultaneously a waterfall excursion and a wildlife experience. The forest around the falls is rich in birds, reptiles, and the large mammals of the Bastar landscape including tigers, leopards, and wild boar. The cave fish of Kotumsar cave, which have lost their pigment and vision through millions of years of adaptation to total darkness, represent one of nature's most remarkable evolutionary stories just a few kilometres from the falls.

October–February when the falls are flowing well and the national park is most accessible.

💡 Pro tip

Each tier deserves individual attention — the tiered cascade is too tall for a single wide-angle shot. Focus on individual falls within the sequence.
