About Koyna Forest

Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary wraps around the Koyna Reservoir — the source of Maharashtra's largest hydroelectric project — in one of the wettest corners of the northern Western Ghats. The forest receives extraordinary monsoon rainfall averaging over 6000 mm annually, sustaining some of the densest and most diverse moist semi-evergreen vegetation in peninsular India. The sanctuary is also one of the most seismically active areas in India, with earthquakes recorded regularly due to reservoir-induced seismicity.
